The White House requested the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts (ULEM) Director of the Domestic/Sexual Violence Program, Reverend Traci Jackson Antoine to speak at the first convening of the United State of Women Summit in Washington, DC on June 14, 2016. Rev. Antoine brings over fifteen years of experience to the summit on solutions to engage the faith-based community on stopping violence against women, intervention, and prevention.
ULEM’s CEO and President, Darnell Williams states, “I’m pleased to see Traci’s work with the Department of Justice On Violence Against Women is receiving a national platform.” The United State of Women Summit, a large-scale effort to rally together advocates of gender equality to highlight the achievements, challenges and define how to address them.
In 2013, the President signed the third reauthorization of Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), creating new protections for LGBT victims, immigrant women, and Native American women. The legislation also expands housing protections for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking, and enhances reporting, response, and prevention education requirements around these four crimes
In addition, to further advance its commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment, the Obama Administration developed a strategy to prevent and respond more effectively to gender-based violence globally. The purpose of the strategy is to establish a government-wide approach that identifies, coordinates, integrates, and leverages current efforts and resources.
Through these efforts the ULEM strives to enlarge the capacity of each partner agency to better provide culturally specific resources and services for victims and survivors.
In 2014 In 2014, the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts (ULEM) received a grant from the Office Against Women to Enhance Culturally Specific Services for Victims of Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, and Stalking. Reverend Traci Jackson Antoine leads the only Urban League Affiliate overseeing the raining and programming for domestic and sexual assault.
